Weekly Meetings

December PHRMA Luncheon *Volunteers Needed*

When: Wednesday, December 12, 2012.  10:45am - 1:00pm
Where:  DoubleTree Hotel, Lloyd Center, 1000 NE Multnomah Portland, OR 97232

This is a great opportunity to become involved with the PSU HRMA student chapter!  This volunteer opportunity will also allow you to interact with other HR like minded professionals in the Portland area!  Lunch will be provided as well!

Key takeaways from the meeting;

Personal Branding:

As you meet people you begin to build your personal brand image.
Brand:  how you are perceived when your name comes up.
Dress for the job you want.
Email and voicemail should be professional.
Speak up at meetings/classes with thoughtful input.

Resume Essentials:

Crisp verbs, not paragraphs.
Bullet points (easy to read)
Purpose of resume is to impress a recruiter and spark a conversation.
Spelling is critical.
Have personal info current.
Include GPA (above 3.0 is rule of thumb), leadership roles and extra curricular work (volunteering) and extra skills (bilingual, CPR, computer skills, etc..)
Make sure references can quantify your experience.
Limit to one page.

Career Services:

Take advantage!!!
Preparation is key!
Mock interviews, resume and cover letter reviews equally important.
Visit PSU career services website: Becky Einhoff is SBA career advisor.

Elevator Pitch:

Sell yourself in 30 seconds.
Items to include, Education, Credentials, Accomplishments, Interests.
Elevator pitch gives employers something to resonate with.
Make a personal business card for networking purposes.  Puts you a step further ahead of what everyone else is doing.

Networking:

Very important.
Helps develop your personal brand.
Push yourself outside your comport zone.
Always send follow up thank you notes.
Keep in touch with your contacts.
